Now

This is not the story of anyone.
All the old farm hands do not reappear in this tableau.
Even sunlight shifts position too fast
to be noted here. I am dumping all the moments
out of the burlap sack.
We will not pick them up.
Anything we can’t see instantly
will not be gazed upon. Because
will not be countenanced.
There is no railway station with clock.
We are not taking a trip,
we are not about to embark.
We are already here. We have never left.
We are not anyone else, including ourselves.

Clarke Owens’s most recent publication is Thaw, a chapbook published by Finishing Line Press.
