Split Peas

promise me
these blistered
streets won’t
last forever

            sunflower seeds
                        scattered on charred
                        playing cards

you say they come to save us, these trucks with bulgar wheat & split peas & cooking oil but they come and do not return, they come & do not bring enough, they come and leave us in our home that is both our home & nothing like it, they come & leave us

stranded, a market
rotting melons
            juice dribbles
            amidst rubble
